Above are some of the skyscrapers we fabricated at Digital Domain, led by Neils Neilsen, for the flying-taxi chase sequence. They stand about 25 - 30 feet tall. I coordinated a crew to install a variety of approximately 5000 tiny light bulbs throughout this Manhattan set alone. This crew of about 9, including Alan McFarland, Mark Whitney, the humble Stuart Ziff, Steve Dulin, Brett Philips, and Jane Kilkenny continuously installed miniature lights right up until the moment the camera rolled....about 100 times. We also lit about a dozen space ships, another dozen flying cars, and a 96th scale Brooklyn set
Below is the "Mondoshowan" spacecraft, one of several ships built in Digital's model shop for this film. It was the first one constructed. Stuart Ziff and I designed and fitted it with about 350 incandescent lights, and 1400 fiber optic strands.
Along with coordinating the miniature lights, I also designed and coordinated all of the motion control rigging of the miniatures. Some of these miniatures weighed over 350 pounds, yet still had to precision rotate on 3 axis. For the heavier models, such as the Mondoshowan Ship, we reconfigured and made new parts for a mover originally built for Apollo 13.
