WAR OF THE WORLDS

Tom Cruise and glowing vines

While employed at Stan Winston Studios, I was tasked with developing a glowing vine that could be mass produced and cover an enormous set. A variety of methods were ultimately used. Foreground vines were cast in silicone and embedded with fiber optics. Illuminators under the ground (a fabricated stage) were fitted with custom color wheels that provided visual animation to the vine. Distant vines were simple rope lights. Also, over 100 fiberglass panels were made and backlit from beneath the deck. These were all highly labor-intensive processes.

Steven Spielberg is selecting his favorite glowing vine look from the many samples we provided. He liked most of them. We proceeded into hyper-build mode and made a variety of vines, and a lot of them.

If you can make this out, you'll see the fiber optic bundles coming down through the floor, wrapped in protective black socks, and feeding into bright illuminators mounted to the underside of the deck.
