I was the one of the first effects people
to work on Dante's Peak on a preliminary R & D budget at Digital Domain. I led
the development of various physical lava effects, which Visual Effects Supervisor
Pat McClung would shoot, and the computer guys would then assemble into a sample
shot for Universal Studios' executives. They liked what we produced and awarded the
project to DD.
Most effects were done in miniature, such as this narrow escape sequence that is
1/4 actual size. Built on a Van Nuys Airport tarmac, it literally may have been the
largest miniature ever.
